OSHA recently designated June 12-18 as Safe + Sound Week. This nationwide event aims to raise awareness and understanding of the health and safety programs that protect workers.

The event is co-sponsored by AIHA, NSC, ASSE, and NIOSH — and has more than 85 partners including trade associations and professional groups. OSHA encourages organizations of any size and industry to show their dedication to health and safety by hosting informative events.

Regarding the initiative, U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta stated, “Our nation has made great strides in raising awareness about the importance of workplace safety, yet more than four million workers suffer serious job-related injuries or illnesses annually. We can do better.”

How to Get Involved

Creating a successful health and safety program involves keeping your management team, employees, and community informed about best practices and expectations. Get involved with Safe + Sound Week by hosting an educational event — don’t worry, OSHA offers tools to help you plan your event such as sample agendas and event planning checklists. They also break down event topics into three main categories:

  • Management Leadership: The top of an organization sets the example for valuing health and safety. Participate in management leadership events to visibly show dedication to this core organizational value.
  • Worker Participation: Engage your workers and show them they are a valuable partner in establishing health and safety in the workplace. They are the experts on their jobs and may have knowledge and innovative ideas on how to improve health and safety.
  • Find and Fix Hazards: Make the goal of establishing procedures to identify and control potential health and safety hazards. You can spotlight hazards and even take steps to implement a medical surveillance program.

Benefits of Participation

Participating in Safe + Sound Week can help you start a new health and safety program or invigorate an existing one. OSHA also offers additional benefits for participating organizations such as a certificate of recognition and a web badge.

While recognition is great, the main importance of Safe + Sound week is to highlight the importance of keeping workers safe and healthy. An estimated 12 workers die every day due to health and safety issues. Show your dedication every day by instituting comprehensive programs in your workplace such as medical surveillance.
